The Forgotten Dogs of Quillabamba
High in the lush hills of Peru lies the town of Quillabamba — vibrant, warm, and surrounded by the wonders of nature. Yet behind its beauty, some of its most vulnerable residents are suffering silently.
These are the dogs of Quillabamba. Strays. Survivors. Souls with stories written on their faces.
Many of them live with severe facial disfigurements — open wounds, missing noses, exposed tissue. At first glance, it's shocking. But behind each wound is a deeper wound of neglect, poverty, and the absence of access to even basic veterinary care.

Some of these injuries are the result of untreated infections, bite wounds, or chronic diseases like canine mucocutaneous leishmaniasis, a parasite transmitted by sandflies that eats away at the skin and tissue. Others have suffered from facial tumors, dental abscesses, or maggot infestations (myiasis) caused by open wounds. Whatever the cause, the result is the same: pain, vulnerability, and isolation.
Yet somehow, these dogs still look at you with trust. They wag their tails. They want love.
This photo series is not just a documentation of their reality — it's a call to action.
They need Access to basic medical care, Sterilization campaigns to reduce suffering
Education for local communities about prevention and treatment
Support for NGOs and rescue shelters working in the region.
